Another example of popular culture getting square dance slightly wrong. I guess we should be happy that some children will get an introduction to square dancing through this, but even very young children can do more authentic versions of square dancing.
Eminem has a song called “square dance”. Unfortunately, the beat is too slow to do an actual square dance to it! This song is quite typical of Eminem, so if you have “gentle sensibilities” (i.e. you don’t enjoy listening to music with swearing and other kinds of foul language), I would recommend not listening to it.
I guess the two parts that make this song “square dancey” are the chorus (see below) and the banjo-type instrument that you can hear in the background sometimes.
Here is the song.
I can’t remember ever seeing an ad for cigarettes on TV as I think such ads were banned before I was born, so this was kind of shocking to see.
Smoking is bad for you, dancers. And it makes you and your clothes smell awful.
Or at least, don’t smoke and dance. Stinky poo!
This could be a good song to use with very little children (e.g. up to age 5) to introduce the idea that square dancing is fun.
I have had success teaching Grade 1-3 students how to dance to singing calls. They loved it! I would recommend introducing actual square dancing as soon as possible.
Another example of square dance in popular culture. Did you notice how the men are on the outside when they promenade?
This is actually more like an army drill (“I don’t know, but I’ve been told”) than square dance cadence, but I’m including it here as an example of one image that the general public has about square dancing (jangly instruments and someone telling you what to do).
Square dancing depicted (with calls in French!) in Daisy Town, a 1971 French-Belgian film based on the comic series Lucky Luke.
This is a good example of the image that the average person might have of square dancing.
I’m not sure about your club, but there’s a lot less “hitting people over the head with planks” in mine.
There’s even a cover version of this song!
